Paths

Paths are fun.  They highlight strong points in a garden, give a property a deeper feel and entice people to the yard. A path leads you quietly and suggests a secret. The greatest success a path can claim is that a person has found it's secret.

A really good path can transport a person to this spot without ever having a foot set on it.  It points to a promise which can be contemplated from a deck with a cup of coffee.  It discusses possibilities and encourages quiet thought.

Formality in a path destroys the effect.  One weed in formality wrecks the whole effect.   A permanent path promises responsibility in its maintenance and suggests responsibility in its destination.  A faint worn path that rises out of the surrounding environment created itself and has a purpose other than itself.

Pea gravel Path

Dowdle pea gravel gar2gate.jpg (62047 bytes) From the garage door to the sanctuary of the back yard can be less formal.  It is not shoveled in the winter and is not as heavily trafficked
The customer had originally used round stones to go to the gate and did not want to throw them out.  We brought the stones into the design and made the transition at the gate. Dowdle transition at gate.jpg (51558 bytes)
Dowdle deck to gate transition.jpg (44301 bytes) Originally the path ended at the point where the pea gravel ends.  To complete the path it was essential to have it begin at the deck.  Not wanting to lose the grass another transition was made.

Polredpathforst.jpg (69041 bytes) This path when completed will stretch over 600' through a glade of trees.  It is one of my favorites.
Polrocksbygar.jpg (51172 bytes) Not created by Schepers Property Maintenance this is, however a beautiful example of simplicity and function.  It is a shortcut that is used, but not promoted.
Home hidden secret stairs.jpg (670665 bytes) my secret stairs are the result of wanting to achieve a path and not a walk.
